In eastern North America, sedges (genus <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/40001437?tab=images\">Carex<\/a><\/em>) and panic grasses (genus <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/40029648?tab=images\">Dichanthelium<\/a><\/em>) are notorious for having many species with similar characteristics. In Central America, tree seedlings in the avocado family (<a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/42000016?tab=images\">Lauraceae<\/a>) can be tricky to separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes we also encounter oddballs \u2013 plant species that it\u2019s hard to see where they fit into the contemporary landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Torrey\u2019s mountain mint (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/17601672?tab=images\">Pycnanthemum torreyi<\/a><\/em>) is a bit of both \u2013 an oddball species whose relationships to other mountain mints is not yet worked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?resize=2048%2C1536&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pycnanthemum-torreyi-b-harris.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Late-season aspect of Torrey\u2019s mountain mint. Photo credit: B. Harris.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like others in its genus, Torrey\u2019s mountain mint is an aromatic herb that grows (mostly) in more-or-less open areas. Its crushed leaves have a delightful minty smell. In summer, it produces clusters of small, white flowers that are visited by a variety of pollinators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike some other mountain mints, Torrey\u2019s is also rare. <a href=\"https:\/\/explorer.natureserve.org\/Taxon\/ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.141413\/Pycnanthemum_torrei\">NatureServe<\/a> ranks it as a G2, meaning that it is imperiled throughout its range \u2013 which extends sporadically from New Hampshire to Kansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia has more Torrey\u2019s mountain mint populations than the other states. <a href=\"https:\/\/floraofvirginia.org\/\">The Flora of Virginia<\/a> describes its habit as \u201cdry, rocky, or sandy woodlands and clearings.\u201d In some places, like the Piedmont, it occurs mainly on basic soils, whereas in other places, like the Coastal Plain, it lives in sandy, acidic soils. In the mountains it has been found also in limestone seepages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"an-oddball-species\"><strong>An oddball species<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While restoring natural areas in Chicagoland in the 1980s, Stephen Packard described some of the plants he saw as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/43439280?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents\">oddball species<\/a>\u201d. Species like purple milkweed (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/2601052\">Aslcepias purparescens<\/a><\/em>) and cream gentian (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/13800758\">Gentiana alba<\/a><\/em>) grew neither in closed forest nor in open prairie, so where did they belong? These species preferred intermediate levels of light, such as would be found beneath a spreading burr oak. Packard\u2019s observation that these species preferred savanna conditions sparked his realization that savanna had once been a frequent component of the Chicago landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew Albrecht has considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/2020\/12\/30\/how-a-rare-plant-provided-clues-to-restoring-a-degraded-ecosystem\/\">similar possibility<\/a> in Tennessee for Pyne\u2019s ground plum (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astragalus_bibullatus\">Astragalus bibullatus<\/a><\/em>). This species grows on so-called cedar glades around Nashville, but it does not grow right in the middle. It prefers the edges where there is intermediate light. This suggests that these cedar glades may once have had softer edges that tapered slowly from exposed, rocky glade into open woodland. With modern fire suppression, these edges have become hard; many glades are now bordered by dense forests of eastern red cedar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Could our own <em>Pycnanthemum torreyi<\/em> fall into the same category? An \u201coddball species\u201d with a preferred niche that is neither full sun nor full shade? In our fieldwork on the northern Virginia Piedmont, we encountered several populations of Torrey\u2019s mountain mint, all of which were growing in edgy sites, like powerline right of ways, or the edge of an old apple orchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-habitat-jl-reid.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1216\" height=\"912\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-habitat-jl-reid.jpg?resize=1216%2C912&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-habitat-jl-reid.jpg?w=1216&amp;ssl=1 1216w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-habitat-jl-reid.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-habitat-jl-reid.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nher.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-habitat-jl-reid.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A small population of Torrey\u2019s mountain mint grows along one edge of this field near the forest edge, not in the open center of the field. Is this typical of this species\u2019 preferred light environment?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last summer, one of us (Leighton) tested <em>P. torreyi<\/em>\u2019s habitat affinities inadvertently and with a <em>very<\/em> small sample size. He planted three seedlings in his small, Blacksburg, Virginia yard \u2013 one in an exposed spot on the south side of the house and two in a partially-shaded spot on the north side of the house. The plant in the more open, southerly spot grew okay, but it was somewhat stunted \u2013 like a spider plant that has been left out in the sun. Its stem and leaves grew short and tough. In contrast, the two plants on the north side of the house grew full and spread out, both flowering and fruiting in their first season. They also remained green late into the season, even after nearby <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/17600278?tab=images\">P. tenuifolium<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/17601127?tab=images\">P. incanum<\/a><\/em> had senesced. If this was a species desirous of full sun, shouldn\u2019t it be doing better in the exposed position in the back by the parking lot?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-north-side-jl-reid.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pyc-tor-north-side-jl-reid.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2431\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Two Torrey\u2019s mountain mints growing well and flowering in partial shade on the north side of JL Reid\u2019s home in Blacksburg, Virginia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly Leighton\u2019s sample is way too small to draw any conclusions, but it does make us wonder if Torrey\u2019s mountain mint prefers and intermediate level of light, such as would be found in a savanna or an open woodland. These disturbance-dependent habitats were once widespread but are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378112720310252?casa_token=vIPtgBD6SEoAAAAA:4Oe4L_y8JVvZ72Miawxr-_6kpg09rm4qewHUBcB6sCU9uKzsuAWNijQJEjSJeVHdL-S5sVmkZwc\">excluded<\/a> today in much of the eastern United States. Maybe Torrey\u2019s mountain mint is an oddball species whose habitat preferences will eventually lead us to design new restoration targets in Virginia, but we\u2019ll have to study its ecology in a bit more detail first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-problematic-species\"><strong>A \u201cProblematic Species\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Flora of Virginia also highlights that Torrey\u2019s mountain mint is a \u201cproblematic species\u201d, whose interpretation is \u201cconfounded by its similarity to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.tropicos.org\/Name\/17601673?tab=images\">Pycnanthemum verticillatum<\/a><\/em> and its hybridization with other species.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During our fieldwork in 2020, we were able to positively identify all of the individuals that we encountered, differentiating <em>P. torreyi<\/em> from <em>P. verticillatum<\/em> by characteristics of their flowers and leaves. Still, the possibility that Torrey\u2019s mountain mint is not a well-differentiated species is troubling. Several landowners in our area are conserving open habitat in part because this rare species occurs there, so it would be nice to know if it is a good species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked Gary Fleming, a Vegetation Ecologist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/natural-heritage\/about\">Virginia Natural Heritage Program<\/a>, for his thoughts. \u201cWell, the entire genus <em>Pycnanthemum<\/em> is a bit problematic!\u201d Gary wrote me in an email. He explained that the problem is that nobody has studied this genus using molecular phylogenetics, that is, using DNA to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships between species. As a result, our understanding of how species in this genus relate to each other is pretty fuzzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I think <em>P. torreyi<\/em> is a good species,\u201d Gary continued, \u201cOver the years, I&#8217;ve observed it in numerous places state-wide and it appears to be morphologically very consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a state whose flora has been studied for hundreds of years, apparently the <em>Pycnanthumum<\/em> nut has not yet been cracked.
