Also, as needed, we undertake restoration interventions, particularly in our post-agricultural meadows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mount Desert Island (\u2018MDI\u2019, ~60,000 acres, 24,280 ha) is well known for its breathtaking, rugged coastal scenery and for holding the largest unit of Acadia National Park (~30,500 acres, 12,343 ha), one of America\u2019s earliest (1916) and most visited (~4 million visitors\/year) national parks. The two other units of Acadia National Park include part of Schoodic Peninsula (2,366 acres, 957 ha) and part of Isle au Haut (2,900 acres, 1,200 ha).&nbsp;&nbsp;The Garden Preserve\u2019s natural lands are directly adjacent to Acadia National Park and mirror it ecologically; both are covered by spruce-dominated hills (primarily red spruce,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tropicos.org\/name\/24900171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Picea rubens<\/a>), streams and wetlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/map-of-acadia-national-park.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/map-of-acadia-national-park.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3841\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Acadia National Park (shown in green on map) comprises three primary units. Our ten miles of trails and ten miles of carriage roads see over 75,000 visitors per year. A twenty-acre, post-agricultural meadow sits at the heart of the natural lands, and from the nearby carriage road the meadow provides picturesque views of the surroundings, making this a popular destination for walkers, dog walkers, horseback riders, and bird watchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/meadow-from-carriage-road-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/meadow-from-carriage-road-2.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3842\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A &#8216;carriage road&#8217; sits next to the 20-acre meadow. (This and all other photos are by the author unless otherwise indicated.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I have focused management on Garden Preserve\u2019s meadow because early successional habitats are uncommon on Mount Desert Island (Acadia National Park manages less than 100 acres of upland meadows on MDI) and because of the presence of invasive glossy buckthorn (<a href=\"https:\/\/tropicos.org\/name\/27500736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Frangula alnus<\/em><\/a>), invasive reed canary grass (<a href=\"https:\/\/tropicos.org\/name\/25509858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Phalaris arundinacea<\/em><\/a>), and some other weedy, nonnative plants. To establish a firm understanding of the plant community I commissioned a wonderful field botanist to conduct a survey of the meadow\u2019s vascular plants (completed in 2020). From 2019-2021 we eradicated the canary grass from three monoculture patches (totaling 2,500 ft\u00b2, 232 m\u00b2) and began restoring the area left behind.&nbsp; We have used a 130-year-old dataset \u2013 Flora of Mount Desert Island, Maine, published in 1894 \u2013 to better understand changes in the meadow\u2019s plant community, and help us select a plant species list for our ecological restoration work. I also visited approximately 15 different meadows \u2013 ranging from 2-60 miles (3.2 km \u2013 97 km) away \u2013 to develop a loose reference system. The goal of this restoration work was to 1) ensure long term eradication of reed canary grass and, 2) establish an enduring native plant assemblage that could provide habitat and other ecosystem benefits to the meadow\u2019s fauna. I began with a conservative approach to \u2018native\u2019 and selected species according to this hierarchy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MDI&gt;Hancock County&gt;Maine&gt;New England. Most species we use in this restoration naturally occur in Maine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/drone-of-canary-grass.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/drone-of-canary-grass.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3844\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aerial photo of a portion of the Land &amp; Garden Preserve&#8217;s meadow. Photo credit: Allison Bourke.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 1894 Flora of Mount Desert Island, Maine by Rand and Redfield&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mdi.mainememory.net\/page\/3817\/display%3Fpage=1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Champlain Society<\/a> was a group of scientifically minded Harvard students who, starting in the early 1880\u2019s, dedicated their summers to learning and documenting MDI\u2019s natural history. Student Edward L. Rand headed up the society\u2019s botanical studies and, along with John C. Redfield, published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/bibliography\/21625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flora of Mount Desert Island, Maine<\/a> in 1894. The flora is incredibly comprehensive, including nearly 1,500 species of vascular plants, marine algae, bryophytes, and lichen. Remarkably, MDI represents less than 1% of the state of Maine\u2019s land area but supports more than half of its known plant species (<a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/rhodora\/volume-107\/issue-930\/04-10.1\/Vascular-flora-of-the-Acadia-National-Park-region-Maine\/10.3119\/04-10.1.short\">Gre<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/rhodora\/volume-107\/issue-930\/04-10.1\/Vascular-flora-of-the-Acadia-National-Park-region-Maine\/10.3119\/04-10.1.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/rhodora\/volume-107\/issue-930\/04-10.1\/Vascular-flora-of-the-Acadia-National-Park-region-Maine\/10.3119\/04-10.1.short\">ne et al. 2005<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/champlain-society-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/champlain-society-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3845\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Members of the Champlain Society at their summer campsite on Mount Desert Island, 1880. Photo credit: Mount Desert Island Historical Society.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1894 Flora has proven to be a reliably accurate reference for late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century plant life on MDI. For example, by reviewing the herbarium vouchers, <a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/rhodora\/volume-107\/issue-930\/04-10.1\/Vascular-flora-of-the-Acadia-National-Park-region-Maine\/10.3119\/04-10.1.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greene et al. (2005<\/a>) concluded that less than 45 taxa were misidentified. As a natural resource professional, this 285-page book serves me as a priceless reference. I even found an original copy signed by the authors in the Garden Preserve\u2019s library!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Old datasets of this breadth, accuracy and credibility are rare, and therefore extremely valuable to understanding how plant communities change over time. When you compare the \u2018Flora of Mount Desert Island, Maine\u2019 (1894) to the contemporary \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/rhodora\/volume-107\/issue-930\/04-10.1\/Vascular-flora-of-the-Acadia-National-Park-region-Maine\/10.3119\/04-10.1.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vascular flora of Acadia National Park region, Maine\u2019<\/a>, (2005) as <a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/rhodora\/volume-121\/issue-985\/18-04\/FLORISTIC-CHANGE-IN-NEW-ENGLAND-AND-NEW-YORK--REGIONAL\/10.3119\/18-04.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MacKenzie et al.<\/a> (2019) did, you can see just how much has changed in approximately 120 years. They report that between 1894 and 2005, 15.8% of the original species are no longer found on MDI, 34.4% declined in abundance, 30.4% experienced no apparent change in abundance, 19.4% increased in abundance, and there were 205 new plant species in 2005.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their 1894 Flora, Rand and Redfield left us wonderful notes about each taxa\u2019s abundance, special occurrences and locations, which I\u2019ve used to reconstruct something of an 1894 Flora for the Garden Preserve\u2019s meadow (albeit incomplete). For example, many entries include location names where large populations of that taxa could be found, and location names such as \u2018long pond meadows\u2019 (the old name of our meadow), \u2018Seal Harbor\u2019 (the village where the meadow is found), \u2018road to Jordan Pond\u2019 (approximately \u00bd mile from meadow) provide a direct link to the Garden Preserve\u2019s meadow of the 1880\u2019s. To show how prevalent this anecdotal data is, \u2018Long Pond meadows\u2019 is included in 30 taxa entries and \u2018Seal Harbor\u2019 is included in over 100 taxa entries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where Rand and Redfield did not provide location names, I use their notes on habitat (e.g., \u2018fields\u2019, \u2018meadows\u2019, \u2018open areas\u2019) and abundance (e.g., \u2018common\u2019, \u2018frequent\u2019, \u2018rare\u2019), and what I personally know about these species\u2019 habitats to infer which taxa were found in 1894 at or around the Garden Preserve\u2019s meadow. For example, the entry for New York aster (<a href=\"https:\/\/tropicos.org\/name\/50272867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Symphyotrichum novi-belgii<\/em><\/a>) includes \u2018Abundant everywhere in both wet and dry ground\u2019 (pg. 115). Therefore, although Rand and Redfield did not tell us that New York American aster was found at the Long Pond meadows, I can assume that it was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I compared my 2020 meadow survey (340 taxa) to the list I recreated from Rand and Redfield\u2019s 1894 Flora, I found that at least nine native forbs were likely present in the late 19th century but are no longer found on or around the Garden Preserve\u2019s meadow. I call these \u2018historic\u2019 species. There are more than nine historic species, but for the purposes of this article, I only discuss the taxa considered for meadow restoration. The nine historic forbs I have identified are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/2741344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Anaphalis margaritacea<\/em><\/a><em> (<\/em>pearly everlasting<em>), <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/27100351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Clematis virginiana<\/em><\/a> (Virginia virgin\u2019s bower), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/2700760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Eupatorium perfoliatum<\/em><\/a> (boneset), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/50274905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Eutrochium maculatum<\/em><\/a> (spotted Joe-Pye weed), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/5501684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Lobelia spicata<\/em><\/a> (pale-spiked lobelia), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/2701357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Symphyotrichum ciliolatum<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(Lindley\u2019s American-aster),<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/50113036\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Symphyotrichum lanceolatum<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(Lance-leaved American-aster),<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/50264950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Symphyotrichum pilosum<\/em><\/a><em> (<\/em>awl American-aster<em>), <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicos.org\/name\/50111989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Symphyotrichum undulatum<\/em><\/a><em> (<\/em>wavy-leaved American-aster<em>)<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I conclude that these species are no longer found in our meadow, they have not been extirpated from Maine. For example, I see <em>Anaphalis<\/em> <em>margaritacea <\/em>growing on roadsides on MDI, and I infrequently see <em>Eupatorium perfoliatum<\/em> in Acadia National Park. Likewise, I see large swaths of <em>Symphyotrichum lanceolatum<\/em> on the mainland, just three miles from MDI. Other <em>Symphyotrichum<\/em> species were more difficult to find, but they still turned up when I searched similar meadows approximately 30-60 miles from MDI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural resource professionals can be apprehensive by nature because we fear the slow creep of local species extinction. We understandably get nervous when our data reveal that we lost at least nine forbs in a 130-year span. The reasonable question becomes: \u2018With viable populations of these historic species nearby, should we include these in our ecological restoration efforts\u2019?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using \u2018historic\u2019 species in meadow restoration efforts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting in 2021 we decided to incorporate eight of the nine \u2018historic species\u2019 into our meadow restoration efforts (Virginia virgin\u2019s bower requires different habitat characteristics and was used elsewhere), via two different methods: 1) planting pint and quart-size live plants, and 2) seeding (with associated seed bed preparation). These eight historic species were among a larger group of approximately 25 species, all of which are native to Maine and\/or New England and found in similar early successional habitats. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/restoration-year-one-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/restoration-year-one-1.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3849\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The author monitors the germination of native plants at a restoration site, August, three months after seeding. I collected seed from populations on MDI where possible, then as near as possible thereafter. Where I couldn\u2019t collect the seed for a given species myself or obtain wild-collected seed from a trusted colleague in Maine, I purchased seed from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildseedproject.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wild Seed Project<\/a> (Portland, Maine). Some of the asters were only available through larger, Midwestern nurseries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prairiemoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prairie Moon Nursery<\/a> (Minnesota).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aster-ready-for-planting.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aster-ready-for-planting.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3852\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A pint sized wavy-leaved aster ready for planting in a meadow restoration site that was formerly dominated by invasive reed canary grass.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The only consistent impediment to historic plant reintroduction and establishment that we have observed has been deer browse, which impacted six of the eight species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/staff-planting.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/staff-planting.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3857\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Staff planting native plants in a restoration site.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An all too familiar story &#8211; too many deer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White tailed deer foraging has been shown to impact a great variety of North America\u2019s ecosystems including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Thomas-Rooney-2\/publication\/31227941_Deer_impacts_on_forest_ecosystems_A_North_American_perspective\/links\/00463534553196c7e1000000\/Deer-impacts-on-forest-ecosystems-A-North-American-perspective.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forest ecosystems<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Erica-Corbett-2\/publication\/271777960_High_White-Tailed_Deer_Density_Has_Negative_Impact_on_Tallgrass_Prairie_Forbs\/links\/6345d3c1ff870c55ce1a2fe2\/High-White-Tailed-Deer-Density-Has-Negative-Impact-on-Tallgrass-Prairie-Forbs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tallgrass prairie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1365-2664.2007.01290.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boreal forests <\/a>&nbsp;through selective browsing. It is generally accepted that at high enough densities selective deer browse can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Thomas-Rooney-2\/publication\/225335968_High_white-tailed_deer_densities_benefit_graminoids_and_contribute_to_biotic_homogenization_of_forest_ground-layer_vegetation\/links\/00b49534552ddb2707000000\/High-white-tailed-deer-densities-benefit-graminoids-and-contribute-to-biotic-homogenization-of-forest-ground-layer-vegetation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drive floristic changes in plant communities, decrease native plant biodiversity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0378112719310370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impact wildlife populations<\/a> and hinder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0378112716302596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forest regeneration<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Park Service\u2019s ecologists conducted forest health assessments in Acadia National Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/irma.nps.gov\/DataStore\/Reference\/Profile\/2207886\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2006-2013<\/a>, and found that forest health is relatively good, and that deer abundance is within the carrying capacity of the park (i.e. tree regeneration is sufficient). In fact, for both of those metrics, the forests of Acadia National Park scored better than the seven other National Park forests in their \u2018Northeast Temperate Network\u2019 study. Acadia National Park\u2019s forests may not be experiencing the detrimental effects of deer browse that many other forests in eastern USA are (yet), but my work in the Garden Preserve\u2019s meadow suggests that forb diversity in early successional habitats is \u2013 at least in part \u2013 influenced by deer. Ask any gardener or farmer in the northeast USA, and they will agree that deer are an issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In New England, white tailed deer abundance has risen and fallen in response to landscape-scale land use changes since European colonization. The 1890\u2019s saw the lowest historic deer population in the United States (only 350,000 animals). It is very likely that the flora documented by Rand and Redfield in the late 1800\u2019s thrived in a period of low deer abundance, which allowed some of these more deer palatable historic species to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/deer-browse-aster.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mbgecologicalrestoration.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/deer-browse-aster.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3853\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">White tailed deer browse on New England aster in a meadow restoration site. Notice that the terminal shoot has been chewed off.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not currently realistic to manage the deer herd on the Garden Preserve\u2019s natural lands so I have experimented with planting some of the deer-palatable historic species in areas that deer are less likely to access, such as behind pre-existing fences and near buildings and other structures. Incorporating some historic species into our meadow restoration would be nice if it were possible, but I am keeping an open mind going forward regarding which plants we promote versus which plants we try to remove. We have experimented with some (native to Maine) species not currently found on MDI or in the county. So long as deer browse remains an issue, we may need to use plant species that are not native in the strictest sense, and I personally feel comfortable with that.
